everywhere I look I am seeing these gorgeous poufs by John Derian. I want one. I'm pretty sure I need one, probably two. My girls would adore these! Anything resembling a stool, and they are all over it! Must go check to see if he ships to Canada. :)July 31, 2009

shine down

lighting. west elmI am a sucker for great lighting. I remember a conversation with my husband when we were building our house. The so called lighting packages they offer, are truly umm..yuck. He says 'but they're just lights, nobody notices them'. I beg to differ. We are about halfway through the house replacing the lighting, some was done through the builder, like my wonderful front entry hurricane, but others I am slowly finding and changing. He notices the difference now. Thank goodness :) Here are a few I enjoy.

brand+power

As some of you know, I spent a wonderful 5 years of my life as a manager at Pottery Barn. Obviously over the years it has influenced my style, but I have also learned to trust my instinct and not follow all the trends. Picking pieces that fit into my decor, and not redoing my whole home because of one new piece [ ok, yes, I've done that too] took some time to get over!
This home of Patrick Wade+Dave DeMattei, two Williams Sonoma employees is so lovely. Located in Napa Valley it is so in tune with the environment. It was featured a couple of months ago in House Beautiful, and if you read it, I'm sure like me, you took in every piece in every room. It is truly beautiful. And it definitely speaks to the brand.
" Group things in threes and fives. Think pyramid, a hierarchy of heights from high to low. You need a strong focal point so every thing's not equal, and you have something to look at. That's a basic rule of display, whether it's objects or a grouping of furniture. You always need juxtapositions — hard and soft, rough and smooth, shine and matte, old and new, modern and traditional. Then they both stand out. Same old tricks, but it's what makes a room warm and comfortable and friendly and gives it personality. And I love repetition: Repetition is confirmation. A smart woman told me that. It's confirmation that you believe in what you're doing. Repetition makes it stronger. I also love symmetry. Chair-chair, lamp-lamp. It helps you organize, and gives you a base. If there's no grounding in organization, it's all a mess." PW

mother+daughter
I had a conversation with my mom this past weekend about how her decorating style has influenced mine. Her home has always had a great mix of styles, and you can see how that has translated to mine. We both love things new and old, neutral with a hint of color, classic styling + pieces with character.
There have been many magazine interviews that feature mother+daughter spaces, and the similarities between. While the rooms are very different, looking closely, you can see what one has taught the other.
I learned to appreciate the mix of old and new....you?

our homes speak so much to our personal style, and you can see the connection between these two lovely rooms to their creator, jenna lyons+ the creative director for jcrew.
It's a mix of unbelievable style+classic, tailored, something old and something new.
It was this photo [in the Domino book] that inspired me to paint my bathroom black. I love the crispness, against the time worn wood floors.
This is a woman who truly lives the style she embodies. perfect.

The most fabulous pin board, pink chandelier, crown mouldings and blue inlaid chairs.
such detail. wow.
where I'd like to be

I would commit to entertaining every weekend, if I could do it in these surroundings! Even better is this amazing vacation home is in one of my favorite locals, South Carolina. Very traditional elements, yet very relaxed. This scene invites you to enjoy the morning paper, or linger with a glass of wine and great companions long into the evening.
Soft creamy yellows, a show stopper chandelier and a great assortment of plates high above the walk through.
Enjoy this room by Jim Howard.

such a spectacular room. A bold choice to paint walls pink, but what a great effect. It is a subtle warmth that evokes images of gatherings with dear friends, a cozy conversation place. Imagine this room set for a bridal tea.

did you notice the great trellis pillow shown in the hamptons cottage? The fabric is Imperial trellis by Kelly Wearstler, and I found you a great place to buy one of your own. This pillow is spectacular.

such a fantastic mix of elements in this hamptons cottage. The space comes across so calm, yet it is full of life and color. Such a lovely cane chair, and lucite coffee table. Small details like the trim on the drapes, and the smattering of dark pieces really ground the room, and focus your eye in key places. Light wood floors and monochromatic colors leave the space airy. Beautiful.
